Overwatch Widowmaker statue by Blizzard

I don’t play Overwatch, but man, Blizzard sure know how to make appealing looking characters. Widowmaker is one of my favourites, so when Blizzard announced they were making a statue of her I knew I had to pick one up.

First impressions are good. Out of the box I was surprised at just how tall she is at roughly 35cm (13.5″). At 175USD she’s rather cheap for a statue of her size. She’s mostly made out of polystone with parts like the hair being PVC. Assembly is pretty easy as well, a peg on her left foot goes into the rather sturdy base, her left arm attaches via a magnet, and her ponytail via a small metal peg on her head.

The sculpt itself is very nice, though her pose doesn’t quite match her prototype. I feel her head is looking far too down, and unless you put her on a high shelf you won’t be seeing much of her face.

Widowmaker’s simple expression can be missed when viewing her at eye level. I think she looks best when seen at a low angle or when she is on a high shelf.

Unfortunately, when viewed through the Lens of Truth things start going downhill and the reality of a non-limited run sets in. There’s a disclaimer on the site saying that each statue is hand-painted and there’ll be “slight variance in each piece”, but even then this is a bit much.

There are quite a few areas with painting error or bleeding that make even anime figures half her price look like masterpieces. Her head is the biggest offender, especially the black eyeliner, the red cameras and the glossy black part of her visor. It’s like the paint they used was just a bit too thick.

There are quite a few pink paint scratches on the face on my particular statue. Can you spot all of the other mistakes?

Another apparent error as a result of the mass production is the skin tone on her detachable left arm. The blue is duller and it’s quite noticeable.

Close up of her rifle. Some handpainting errors, but forgivable. I think it would look better with a slightlier glossy finish.

I actually think that she looks better from the back than she does from the front, but that could be because all the issues with her head. At least her tattoos appear to be printed/decaled straight onto the her body, so those are are crisp and accurate.

Final thoughts

Widowmaker will make a fine display piece on your shelf, but only when viewed from afar. At the asking price she’s virtually a steal, but if you’re an avid statue collector or a stickler for quality, prepare for disappointment. Your own experience may vary depending on your luck.
